Did You Know?

DID YOU KNOW? Concrete, the world’s most widely used construction material, plays a significant role in emissions of carbon dioxide, a common greenhouse gas, simply for the sheer scale of its production. More than four billion metric tons of cement, a primary ingredient in concrete, is produced a year, accounting for about 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to Chatham House, a London think tank that has studied climate change. North Carolina startup BioMason is one of a few groups making “bio concrete” from natural materials. The company uses microorganisms to grow cement bricks in a process that it says involves zero carbon-dioxide emissions. (WSJ)
